Letter of Protracted wrongful Arrest/Detention to The Inspector General of Police

17thAugust, 2015.
The Inspector General of Police,
Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Shehu Shagari way,
Central Area (Area 11), FCT, Abuja, Nigeria.
Sir,

PROTRACTED WRONGFUL ARREST/DETENTION OF MR. SAMUEL
NNANTA JONAH BY POLICE MEN BELONGING TO SPECIAL
OPERATION SQUAD (SOS)
RIVERS STATE COMMAND,FEDERAL SPECIAL ANTI
ROBBERY SQUAD(FSARS) ADENIJI ADELE LAGOS STATE COMMAND
AND INSPECTOR GENERAL
OF POLICE (IGP) MONITORING UNIT, ABUJA BASED ON A
COMPLAINT WITHOUT A COMPLAINANT.

We are a firm of Legal Practitioners and Human Right Advocates
representing MR. SAMUEL NNANTA JONAH (our Client) of
Rumuekini, Obio/Akpor Local Government
of Rivers State on whose express instructions we have to write as follows:

NOTE strongly that our Client has been detained for upward of one month
nine (9) days as at today of writing ie 17th August, 2015. He was detained
first at Special Operations
Squad (SOS) compound at Old GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State by the
Anti Cultism Unit (ACU)from the 9th of July, 2015 to the 30th of July, 2015
before men from the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS)
Adeniji Adele Lagos came to take him to Lagos on the 30th of July, 2015
where he stayed for another fifteen (15) days before been taken
to Force Headquarters, Abuja on the 15th of August, 2015 where he
is currently been detained till date without being released on bail or
charged to court. Note further that this is a man who went to the Police
Station on his own.

The gravamen of our petition is that on the 21st of June 2015, men of the
Nigerian Police comprising of the Special Operation Squad (SOS), Anti
Cultism Unit (ACU) and
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) etc of the Rivers State Police
Command invaded the hotel of our Client at Rumuekini in ObioAkpo
Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State Nigeria in commando
style destroying properties and killing  in their wake. Our Client is a
respected Community leader and the extant Chief Security Officer (CSO)
of his community-Rumuekini, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area
(LGA) of Rivers State Nigeria.

When our Client got to the police station to seek to know why he was
treated like a common criminal and who was/is behind his ordeal, the
Police told him that they acted on intelligent information. It is further noted
that just like the Police our Client’s job (ie maintenance of security) is fraught
with danger and betrayal. It is therefore expected that the Police should
treat our Client as comrade in arms.

That in the course of the invasion the said Police men killed one
Ifeanyi,  our Client’s worker including a passer bye who came to charge
his phone on that faithful Sunday, 21stof June, 2015 morning. They
arrested several of our Client’s workers and passers bye who were later charged to court for secret cult and unlawful possession.

The said Police men equally de-roofed and damaged our Client’s
building and other items such as television set, ratio set and computer
set etc. They later went to the home of our Client to ransack his house
carting away television sets, home theater, washing machine, microwave
and valuable items of personal apparels such as Gold watches and
necklaces worth over 50 Million Naira.

That as a result of this great human rights violation our Client
who was away at the time and as a responsible citizen of this nation,
voluntarily submitted himself to the Police on the 9th of July, 2015 accompanied by equally prominent members  of the society viz:
Chief (Hon) Emmanuel Worukwo(Jp) and Hon. Prince Timothy
Nsirim-former Chairman Obio/Akpor Local Government Area
(LGA) of Rivers State Nigeria.

That on getting to the SOS base Rivers State Police Command,
our Client was detained irrespective of plea from these prominent
Nigerians to release him on bail to them.

Our Client remained in the custody of Anti Cultism Unit (ACU) at SOS
until the 30thof July, 2015 when Police men from Federal Special
Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) Adeniji Adele Lagos came to take him to
Lagos State on yet another spurious charge where he stayed for another
two (2) weeks plus before been taken to Force Headquarters.

That when our Higher King, Esq of Counsel went to the said Federal
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) Adeniji Adele Lagos to solicit for
the bail of our Client, he was told that there is signal to transfer our Client
to the Force Headquarters,  Abuja for further interrogations.

That indeed our Client was transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja
on the 15thof August, 2015 wherein he is currently been held without bail
or been charged to court as the law requires.

That the whole allegation was found to be false and strongly confirmed
to be trump-up by anonymous enemies in the community, hiding under
the  cloak of Police informant/intelligent report. But the regrettable thing
is that our Client as chief security officer (CSO) works to help Police
solve crime yet he is been treated like a common criminal.

That our client has been wrongfully arrested, detained, harassed
and subjected to untold psychological trauma all calculated attempt by
some faceless enemies of our Client who are determined to destroy him
with the instrumentality of the Police. We urge the Police to resist and
refuse the temptation of being used to intimidate a follow citizen.

In the final analysis Sir, we urge you to use your good office to see
that an innocent man does not suffer injustice by releasing him seven (7)
days after your receipt of the letter because it could be anybody. Our
memories are still fresh with what a whole former Inspector General of
Police (IGP) went through as a result of witch-hunting and trump up
charges. We should say no to it because what goes around  comes
around.

However, note finally that where you continue to ignore, fail, neglect and
refuse to release our Client we shall have no further resort to you before
enforcing our Client’s right in the court of Law with further cost to you.
Thanks for your standing up to injustice.

 Sincerely Yours
